Dash cams provide a strong piece of evidence which you can use if an accident happens. Since it is a useful device, many car owners are considering it for their automobiles. Mounting a dash cam is one of the ideal ways to enhance your security on the road. For new dash camera users, you may find some challenges when installing it. There are several installation methods to put a car recorder camera to the dashboard. One way to mount a dash cam is through a hardwired installation.
Hardwiring is one of the installation methods when mounting a dash cam. Using this method allows the camera device to be powered directly by the car. Once you switch on the ignition, the dash camera will automatically boot up. If you want to hardwire your dash cam, then here are the steps to do it:
Step 1 Complete the accessories in your hardwire installation kit: Check your kit if you have a cable that forks into two. This cable is crucial because you need the first cable end when connecting the cam car recorder to your car's fuse box. On the other hand, the second end is attached to the vehicle's metal body. It is a metal ring used to ground the dash cam.
Step 2 Find an excellent spot for your dash camera: Properly put the dash cam exactly where you want it. An excellent position is near the central rearview mirror because it offers a great view of the road without blocking your field of view. Consider a wide-angle dash cam if you wish to place it in a different position. Wide-angle cameras that have a 4G lens allow you to keep the shape of the images. This feature also gives clear images which are essential for documentation.
Step 3 Organize the wires: Tuck the cable between the roof lining and windscreen. Then put it down on the side of the A-pillar. Although there are different car models, there is usually a space between the panel and the dashboard. Ensure that the wire will reach the fuse box.
Step 4: Attach to a hot in-start fuse: Find a fuse that is "hot in start" rather than "always hot." It is the type of fuse that is given power once the ignition is turned on. Choosing the "hot in start" fuse avoids draining your car's battery. If you want to check which of the fuse sockets attach to the camera, then consider a circuit tester. You may also locate the cigarette lighter fuse then remove it with pillars. After getting rid of it, fit them again to the plug together with the dash cam's hardwire kit. Doing so can give power to both camera and lighter using the same socket.
Step 5 Ground the cables to the metal chassis: Secure the second end of the cable to the body of the car. Try to find a nut and bolt that is connected directly to a metal body panel. Undo the bolt, then hook the ground lug over the nut. Once done, you may now screw the bolt back on.
Step 6 Check if it is working: Check if the camera is powered correctly by turning the ignition on. You can tell that it is hardwired appropriately if the device also shuts off when the ignition is turned off.
Hardwiring a dashcam might be challenging compared to other installation methods, but it provides several advantages. Here are some reasons to consider dash cam hardwire:
It allows constant charging. Plugging your dash cam into the 12V socket may have limited battery life. It is crucial to opt for dash cam hardwire because it offers continuous overnight recording and even if your car is parked.
It enhances security. Since hardwiring allows for constant recording, you can use it to your advantage, especially when you park your car. The dash cam can still record videos of what is happening inside or outside your automobile. If someone crashed into your vehicle, it would be easier to check who is at fault.
It is more efficient. When you hardwire your dash cam, you will have an excess socket where you can charge your phone or power other devices. You can also use the same socket as a cigarette lighter, as mentioned earlier.
It keeps you organized. Hardwiring a dash camera to your automobile will prevent the wires from hanging down. This method also maintains a clear field of view because the cable will not block your sight. Your car will look better since there are no visible plunging wires when you hardwire your dash cam.
Some car owners keep asking themselves if they should hardwire their dash cam. One of the basis to answer the question is the type of dash cam that you will be using. You may use your smartphone or even an action camera as a dash cam. Since hardwiring requires your dash cam to be connected to the fuse box, this method may not be applicable for some types of dash cameras. If you have a standard one, then this installation method is advisable because it allows a discrete set-up as well as parking surveillance.
Hardwiring a dash camera may sound complicated, but it could be less challenging by being familiar with the car parts as well as reading a manual. You also have the option to seek a professional's help for further assistance. Usually, it only takes less than an hour to hardwire your dashcam.
